Extra
“Extra" is a slang term used to describe someone or something that is over-the-top, excessive, or dramatic in behaviour, appearance, or actions.
Where did the term "extra" come from?
"Extra" has origins in African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and has been in use for several decades. It gained broader popularity and usage in mainstream culture over the years, particularly in the context of social media and pop culture. It implies going beyond what is considered normal or necessary, often with a sense of flamboyance or attention-seeking.
How is "extra" used on social media?
When referring to a person, calling someone "extra" suggests that they have a tendency to be dramatic, attention-seeking, or overreacting in certain situations. It can describe someone who goes to great lengths to stand out, draw attention to themselves, or make a statement. For example, if someone dresses in an extravagant, flashy, or attention-grabbing manner, they may be described as "extra" in terms of their fashion choices. Similarly, if someone expresses their emotions or reactions in an exaggerated or theatrical way, they might be called "extra" in their behaviour.
The term "extra" can also be used to describe objects, events, or situations. For instance, if a party has elaborate decorations, excessive amounts of food or drinks, and an overall grandiose atmosphere, it may be referred to as an "extra" party.
