10 TikTok Tips for Creating Engaging Content

The classes at TikTok’s CAP University are another reminder that TikTok is a major video platform and a great way to grow your brand.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a TikTok beginner, use these 10 TikTok tips as your go-to checklist guide for creating content on TikTok:

  1. Speak to a niche audience: Otherwise known as sub-cultures, niche communities are the equivalent of a dedicated fanbase that will actively engage with your content. Case in point: BookTok

  2. Be authentic: TikTok is all about experimentation, but it's important to find a tone that works for your brand's personality, resonates with your target audience, and feels authentic — not forced. (See how Later's social team grew our TikTok to over 50K followers).

  3. Engage with your audience: Comments are integral to your overall growth, so it’s important to respond to them! Engaging with comments will create a sense of community, make your audience feel included, and give insight into how your content is resonating.

  4. Optimize your set: When producing content, re-imagine your shot in 9x16, as the vertical format works best on TikTok. When you're shooting and filming your content, get inspiration from other styles you've on TikTok. For example, use shot transitions (such as clothing or location changes) or fun camera angles. Play around and see what works best for your brand.

  5. You don’t need expensive equipment: It’s not about how expensive or high tech your gear is; it’s about how you use it to entertain your community. In other words, your content doesn’t need to be incredibly polished. A phone camera works great!

  6. Be original: While using trending audio is great for reach, creating original content is an important piece of the pie too. You can put your own creative spin on a trend or simply create content with your own perspective. In other words: be unique. It shows that your brand has something worth saying, rather than just solely following trends.

  7. Take your audience on a journey: Include them in your content creation process by sharing BTS footage or challenges you've overcome. It's essential to show your story by highlighting how you've built your brand.

  8. Use the tools TikTok offers: TikTok has many editing tools that'll help make your content more exciting. Many creators will edit directly in the app to make their content feel native to TikTok, and will use its text or filter tools.

  9. Provide value to your audience: This tip is simple. Don’t use the platform solely to advertise. Instead, use it to entertain or educate your audience.

  10. Create a TikTok script: Once you've written your script, cut it down to the bare bones. Remember, content on TikTok moves fast, so you want to highlight one-liners and punchlines that will bring your script to life. Tell your story, but as quickly as possible.

So there you have it, 10 TikTok tips for creating engaging content — straight from the platform itself.

Remember: Be authentic, be engaging, and above all else, be original. Keep these tips in mind and who knows, you could be the next big thing to blow up.
