When is "slay" used?

The term "slay" is often associated with fashion, music, and performance, but can be used in a variety of contexts. For example, someone might say, "She slayed that runway show," to describe a model who did an exceptional job on the catwalk, or "He slayed that presentation" to describe a colleague who crushed their presentation at work.

“Slay” can also be used as a way to agree with someone or encourage them, for example, if your friend was applying for a job they really want you can show your support by saying, “Yes, slay!”

The term "slay" has also been used in the context of social justice and advocacy, particularly in the phrase "slay the patriarchy," which means to challenge and dismantle systems of sexism and oppression. What is the origin of the term "slay"?

“Slay” is believed to have emerged in the African American LGBTQ+ community in the 1980s and 1990s.

At that time, "slay" was used as a term of admiration and praise for someone who was performing exceptionally well in a drag show, dance competition, or other performance. The term was popularized in the ballroom scene, which was a subculture that celebrated and showcased LGBTQ+ performers, particularly Black and Latinx individuals.
