How to Add Custom Instagram Fonts to Your Bio, Captions, Comments & IGTV Descriptions

Adding custom fonts to your Instagram strategy can be an awesome way to strengthen your brand’s personality and capture your audience’s attention.

For example, at Later we use custom fonts in our Instagram captions to highlight important details, or to place emphasis on certain words:

But when it comes to Instagram’s in-app font selection, there’s only one default option. Fortunately, you can use an Instagram fonts generator to add some extra creativity to your content!

Step #1: Use an Instagram Fonts Generator to Find a Font

There are tons of free and easy-to-use Instagram fonts generator tools to add a pop of personality to your profile.

Instagram Fonts Generator #1: IGFonts.io

Instagram Fonts is one of the easiest desktop font generators. Simply type your text into the input box, browse an infinite number of font variations, and copy your favorite to paste into Instagram.

This site has almost every variation of compatible unicode font on offer, ranging from subtle to stylish to statement.

Instagram Fonts Generator #2: CoolFont.org

Cool Fonts is another great desktop tool for creating custom fonts, with a user-friendly interface and tons of fun typeface options to choose from.

What’s more, Cool Fonts also has an integrated symbol generator — so if you’re looking for even more custom tricks, you can get creative with symbols too!

All you have to do is click on one of hundreds of symbol options to copy it and use it on your Instagram account.

Instagram Fonts Generator #3: LingoJam

Much like Instagram Fonts, LingoJam is another desktop font tool that generates thousands of variations that you can easily copy and paste.

Instagram Fonts Generator #4: Sprezz Keyboard (Also Available on iOS)

If you’re looking for some more unusual custom fonts for your brand, Sprezz could be a great place to start.

Either type your text into the “Try Fonts Online” text box on desktop or download the iOS app from the App Store.

Instagram Fonts Generator #5: Cool Fonts App – Available on iOS and Android

If you’re in the market for a font generator tool for mobile, the Cool Fonts app is full of options.

From custom keyboards to the in-app generator, there are tons of different fonts to choose from — although you may want to invest in the paid version of the app if you want to skip the ads.

Step #2: Paste the Font in Your Bio, Captions, Comments, or IGTV Descriptions

Once you find a font that works for your brand, simply copy the text, open the Instagram app, and paste it wherever you like.

To add to your Instagram name or bio, tap the Edit Profile button on your profile page and paste the custom font:

To add a custom font to an Instagram caption, simply paste the custom font text into the caption editor before publishing.

TIP: Add custom fonts to your captions as you plan and schedule your posts with Later

Later’s caption editor will preserve all line breaks and any custom fonts that you add — so you can write next-level captions that convert for your brand in advance.

Plus, you can batch write a whole week’s worth of captions in just one sitting, which is the best way to stay focused and be more productive.

4 Best Practices for Using Custom Instagram Fonts

Custom Instagram fonts can be a great way to add a point of difference to your content, but they can also do more harm than good if they aren’t used mindfully.

Here are 4 pointers to keep your custom fonts on the right track:

  • Keep Your Aesthetic in Mind: Pick your fonts carefully. Even the most basic font often has a connotation, so always think about what feels most appropriate for your brand and aesthetic. For example, minimalist fonts can be indicative of modern simplicity, while italicised script fonts can be depicted as romantic or feminine.
  • Use Sparingly: There can be too much of a good thing. Use custom fonts sparingly, too much can look spammy and will lessen the impact. At Later, we save custom fonts for key calls to action, headers, and emphasis.
  • Consider Legibility: Some custom fonts are really hard to read. Make sure you can easily read any text you share on both desktop and mobile.
  • Be Consistent: Once you’ve found an effective custom font that aligns with your brand, stick with it. Being consistent can strengthen your branding and will build a sense of familiarity with your followers.

How to Add Custom Instagram Fonts to Instagram Stories

Unlike the rest of Instagram, Instagram Stories have 5 different fonts to choose from: classic, modern, neon, typewriter, and strong.

However, it’s likely that we’ll have some new fonts coming to Instagram Stories pretty soon.

Instagram recently shared a preview of 5 brand new fonts they’re currently testing with a small percentage of users:

But even with these exciting new additions, there isn’t much room to create a truly branded experience on Instagram Stories.

There are 3 main ways to add custom fonts to your Instagram Stories:

#1: Use a Graphic Design App

If you’re new to the world of Instagram Stories design, there are plenty of easy-to-use creative apps to help you along the way.

Over and Canva are both great options for creating bespoke Instagram Stories for your brand. Both apps have a huge range of fonts on offer, as well as the option to upload a custom font too.

In this example, we used Over to add text to a stock image from our camera roll.

To recreate this, select a video or image from your camera roll, and then set the size to Story:

Next, tap the Text icon and enter your chosen text. Scroll across to select a font, or select Get More to open Over’s Library of fonts.

To upload a custom font, scroll across from the Library to the Custom tab, and select Add Fonts.

From here you can upload a custom font into Over to use in your future designs!

TIME-SAVING TIP: Copy and paste text overlays into your Instagram Stories! Use a design app like Over to write a line of text on a transparent background. Save to your camera roll, copy the image, and paste it into your Instagram Stories by selecting the Text tool and holding the screen for 2-3 seconds until the Paste button appears.

You can also use this copy and paste hack to add text from a font generator tool too!

Once you’re happy with you custom text you can go ahead and schedule your Instagram Stories with Later, making the whole process super easy and seamless.

#3: Use an Instagram Stories Template

If design isn’t your thing (or you’re short on time) there are tons of ready-made Instagram Stories template apps that you can quickly customize for your brand.

The benefit of using a template is that they’re pre-made by designers. So if you don’t have an eye for what fonts, colors, and layouts go well together, Instagram Stories templates are a great option to explore.

Here are 5 creative apps for Instagram Stories templates:

Instagram Stories Templates App #1: Storyluxe
