Why Instagram is Important for Growing Your Business
When we talk about why Instagram is such a great platform for businesses, we often focus on its ability to generate sales and drive traffic.
It’s easy to understand why we do this. Beyond Instagram’s inherent ability to attract online shoppers, in the last year-and-a-half, the platform has released a heap of new features to help businesses achieve their marketing goals.
From shoppable posts to new ways to drive traffic from Instagram Stories, Instagram is fast becoming one of the most effective platforms for businesses to not only reach new audiences but convert them into customers as well.
But there are other important reasons to join the platform as well. In particular, your ability to build trust with your target customers.
“People love to see the raw moments and the sneak peaks and they also like to see your more vulnerable sides, but no other social platform is going to allow them to see your time spent with your family or what you do on the weekend. And it’s okay to share that on Instagram,” Darma says.
In other words, it’s a mistake to treat Instagram as just a sales channel… because it’s so much more than that! If you want to truly grow your account get your first 1000 followers for Instagram, you need to appeal to their desire to know you.
By doing this, you’re actually hooking your followers to keep up with your story. You’re inviting them to care about you on a deeper level.
This is important because even if your followers aren’t ready to be a customer today, they’re still joining you on the journey. And the day one of your followers does need your product or service, who do you think’s going to come to mind?
How to Brand Your Instagram Profile
Before we get into the nitty-gritty details of how to get your first 1000 followers for Instagram, let’s talk about how to build a strong personal brand.
As Darma discusses in our video workshop, when it comes to the focus of your account, she recommends creating a “personal business brand,” which is sort of a hybrid between a personal account and a business account. The benefit, she says, is that it allows you to pull elements from both, which can help you resonate with your audience more.
That’s step one. The next step is to make sure that you’ve optimized your Instagram profile.
Generally, the first thing Darma recommends doing is looking at is your username. If you’re a personal brand like @leefromamerica it’s a good idea to use your real name. Otherwise, she recommends using the name of your business.
In either case, try to keep it as short and simple as possible. You want your username to stand out and be memorable, so don’t bog it down with too many complicated symbols or numbers.
Next is your name, which is different from your username! According to Darma, a lot of people tend to use their username in their name field, which is a lost opportunity because the words you include in your name field are actually searchable on Instagram! A better strategy is to use targeted keywords.
Try to think about keywords that your follower is searching for on Instagram — maybe it’s your business niche or the products you sell. Once you’ve found the right keywords, put them into your name field.
Finally, your bio. As Darma explains, it’s a good idea to segment your bio into two parts. The first part should quickly explain who you are, who you’re for, what you do, and how. For example, if you run a sneaker brand on Instagram, you’ll want to focus on what you do and offer in the first part of your bio.
The second part of your bio should be used as a call-to-action for the link in your bio. Since Instagram only gives you one link on your profile, Darma recommends using that last line to tell users what’s in it for them to click your link. For example, if you’re running a promo, let users know that they’ll get a 10% discount or a free class if they click the link your bio.

What to Post on Instagram to Get 1000 Followers for Instagram
There’s little question that content you post has a huge impact on how fast you grow and who you attract.
So how do you go about attracting the right followers with your posts? Darma recommends using her “CHECT” system, which is a checklist to make sure that all of your posts are optimized for growth.
The first C stands for content. It’s a reminder to make sure that your content is high-quality — that the image isn’t pixelated and that it matches your brand and Instagram aesthetic.
The H stands for hashtags. When finding hashtags for your account, try to think about the niche or industry that you’re in, as well as the lifestyle of your customers. What hashtags are they interested in?
The E stands for engaging. This is a reminder to take the time and engage with your followers and other accounts. The fact is that on Instagram, you get what you give. You can’t expect to grow if you’re not engaging with your community too!
The C stands for captions. Captions are a really great place to share value and share more about yourself and your story with your followers — and unfortunately, a lot of businesses don’t use captions to their fullest. While your image or video is what captures people’s attention, your caption is where people get to know you on a deeper level.
And finally, the T stands for tagging, aka tagging other accounts. Darma will often tag up to 20 relevant accounts in her posts, including tourism boards, feature accounts, and repost accounts. You should also frequently tag the location of your post as it will often improve the amount of engagement you get.
How to Grow Your Business With Instagram Stories
Instagram Stories is another big component of growing your account and attracting your target followers and customers. Unfortunately, a lot of people get tripped up because they don’t understand the difference between their feed and their Instagram Stories.
Darma recommends putting your best foot forward in your feed — keep everything high quality and representative of your brand. But with Instagram Stories, since they only have a 24-hour lifespan, it’s a great place to share your journey, behind-the-scenes, and sneak peaks.
So how can you use Instagram Stories to grow your business and get your first 1000 followers for Instagram? According to Darma, her number one tip is to use Instagram Stories to drive attention to her most recent posts. “I want to get everyone who’s looking at my story over to my post — that way, my post gets more engagement, and this tells the Instagram algorithm that it’s high quality,” Darma says.

Darma recommends picking the Stories that really showcase who you are and what your business is about and saving those as a highlight on your profile. That way, when a new potential follower lands on your account for the first time, your highlights will give them a quick introduction to who you are.
And since Instagram Stories Highlights are so versatile, there are a ton of different strategies you can take, including highlighting product reviews, testimonials, tips — whatever provides the most value to new visitors.
